Broadfield aims for students to develop and express their own morals and values and purposes.
Intent
The RE curriculum at Broadfield Specialist School has a number of aims. The first is for all students to recognise the diversity which exists within and between communities and individuals. Through the curriculum, students are taught to appreciate and appraise the significance of different ways of life and ways of expressing meaning. Furthermore, all students are taught to be able to articulate beliefs, values, and commitments. The overall intent is to ensure that members of the Broadfield community are equipped to be able to understand and make moral choices, to be equipped for the future when encountering views and backgrounds that differ from their own, and can reflect on their place in the world.
Implementation
We implement this by following the Lancashire SACRE which is delivered through the school curriculum and embedded across all key stages.
Students follow a curriculum path which studies the Major world faiths through the arts, culture, holy books, communities and religious tenets. Students also encounter non-religious views, alternative religions and philosophical questions in order to broaden their experience of religion. Due to the wide range of needs across the school, the curriculum utilises optional topics based around festivals, religious stories and events that incorporate sensory experiences and teaching methods to ensure all students are able to fully access and are enriched in the RE curriculum.
Impact
Through RE each student is taught to appreciate RE and the wonders of diversity, be it through faith, culture, need or background. Students are supported to become ethical, moral and thoughtful individuals that can encounter the wider world with resilience and compassion.
