Dance is about creating an inclusive and creative environment where every student can thrive.
At Broadfield Specialist School our aim in Dance is to inspire and develop students’ creative, physical, emotional and intellectual capacities through a rich and challenging range of dance styles, tasks and studies. The national curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
The dance curriculum promotes cognitive development by stimulating creativity, imagination, and problem solving skills. Students engage in improvisation, choreography and enhancing their cognitive flexibility and artistic expression. Broadfield promotes ‘Dance for all.’
We offer opportunities within and beyond taught lessons that promote the growth of confident individuals whose qualities of resilience, reflection and independence, gained within creative and performance work will prepare them well for the future. Throughout their Dance lessons, pupils’ progress will be tracked using B-Squared. Through dancing, SEND children learn about body coordination and control. Dance is a fun way to practice balance skills, good posture, and build awareness of the body in space. Meanwhile, developing rhythm helps with improved motor control: both gross and fine motor skills develop when SEND children attend dance classes. These skills are translated into the movement patterns required for daily activities.
We want our students to enjoy Physical Education and fulfil their potential in this subject. To do this we aim to provide stimulating teaching in an attractive and safe learning environment. A variety of teaching styles and approaches are used in lessons appropriate to the topics being taught and the particular needs of the students.
Dance can foster a sense of joy, confidence and self-expression in our students and is a fantastic exercise that can provide significant physical advantages,:
Dance can promote a state of euphoria that lasts long after the music stops: students can effectively leave their cares behind on the dance floor and forget the things that might hold them back. Flexibility is key in our approach to the dance curriculum. We recognise that progress looks different for each student and we celebrate every achievement along the way.
