Relationships, Sex and Health Education
At Broadfield, we aim to give our students the opportunity to learn about themselves, their changing bodies through puberty, how to keep themselves safe, about different relationships we develop online and offline as we grow older, the pleasure of consensual physical contact, and overcome the confusion over public and private or safe and unsafe touch.
For many of our learners, healthy relationships, body changes, naming body parts and keeping safe is a priority. To promote the safety of our learners, we aim to support them to communicate effectively. We teach RSHE at a level that is appropriate to the needs, learning styles and level of maturity of the students. The curriculum is planned and delivered around the government guidelines for each Key Stage. The curriculum is designed by the subject lead for all class teachers to follow and plan their lessons based around the pupil’s level of understanding.
Over the course of the year, students will cover the following topics.
Autumn 1 Relationships – Family and Friends
Autumn 2 Relationships – Intimate and Sexual
Spring 1 Online Relationships, Media and Body Image
Spring 2 Physical Health and Fitness
Summer 1 Health, Prevention and First Aid
Summer 2 Being Safe, Changing Bodies, Sexual Orientation
RSHE is monitored and assessed using Bsquared. Teachers will make judgements around a student’s progress, through their written work and contribution to class discussions. Students are encouraged to share their thought and questions. RSHE lessons are promoted as an opportunity for students to discuss any concerns or clear any confusion they may have, so that they can be confident and knowledgeable when talking about sex and relationships.
