Students are able to be creative, design, explore, use their imagination, and become curious learners. Our students acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on cross-curricular links such as mathematics, science, literacy, art and PSCHE.
The objectives of Food Technology are:
• Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and health
• Cook a repertoire of predominantly savoury dishes so that they are able to feed themselves and others a healthy and varied diet
• Become competent in a range of cooking techniques (for example, selecting and preparing ingredients; using utensils and electrical equipment; applying heat in different ways; using awareness of taste, texture and smell to decide how to season dishes and combine ingredients; adapting and using their own recipes)
• Understand the source, seasonality and characteristics of a broad range of ingredients
Food Technology schemes of work focus on initially allowing students to explore and develop basic skills and confidence within a kitchen setting. Medium term plans are created by teachers of Food Technology following the curriculum paths, with the use of BSquared to support and suitably challenge all students. Lessons are planned to be differentiated to include all students and their range of abilities.
· In KS3, students study food or product design once a week within a double period. This is swapped half way through the year.
· In KS4, depending on individual students Pathway option, they study food for one double and one single lesson per week.
· KS5 classes have one hour a week as part of enterprise based activities or directed time, practising life skills. Students also make and sell food for staff.
· Complex needs classes access food technology through a creative, and multi-sensory curriculum.
A key part of the food technology curriculum is for students to gain life skills, independence, and confidence within a kitchen setting. They have full access to a well-resourced food technology classroom which the students use each lesson, supervised by staff.
Students work is assessed via observation and marking of work in accordance with BSquared individual targets and exam board specifications. Teachers use progress judgements against the learning objectives and the success criteria for the lesson. Feedback is given to the students during lessons which allows them to develop and progress in future tasks. Students build upon skills each year and the subject lead keeps track of data progress for every group. Students are encouraged to assess and evaluate both their own work and that of their peers. This helps them to appreciate their success and areas for development, and take ownership of their learning.
Each student is given an individualised platform to explore the world of Food Technology and to achieve their full potential. We recognise that progress looks different for each student and we celebrate every achievement along the way.

Every student has a voice at Broadfield Specialist School
To evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum, we use various methods.
These include observing children’s ability to speak and listen in another language, marking written work, capturing images and videos of students participating in speaking and listening activities, interviewing students to gather their feedback (pupil voice), conducting moderation staff meetings to scrutinize pupil’s work and promote a dialogue between teachers to gain a better understanding of their class’s work.
In addition, the institution also conducts annual reporting of standards across the curriculum to parents, learning walks, and subject tracking.
By utilising a range of assessment methods, the institution aims to obtain a comprehensive overview of their curriculum’s impact on students’ learning outcomes.
The MFL subject leader will continually monitor the impact MFL teaching is having on the children’s learning, through work scrutinies, to ensure the progress of knowledge and skills is being taught.Impact will also be measured through key questioning skills built into lessons, child-led assessment such as success criteria grids and summative assessments aimed at targeting next steps in learning.
