KS3/4 Music

Music is a source of great pleasure and enjoyment, but is also a medium of communication, creative exploration and self-expression.

Intent

Music is so much more than an academic subject or skill. It is a community activity, a powerful therapeutic tool and a means of communication. Music is embedded in our culture at Broadfield, and we strive to make it accessible for all in a way that encourages a philosophy of performance. As well as giving students the tools and knowledge to develop their musicianship and make progress, we also aim to promote a love of learning music through extra curricular activities and engaging lessons.

Implementation

Music is individualised and multisensory in itself, but teaching is delivered in the following strands:

National Curriculum

Students whom follow the national curriculum follow a sequential plan to best prepare them for accredited courses and post 16 learning. In year 7, the theme is Becoming a Musician where pupils learn the musical elements through a range of instruments. Once students have learned the basic building blocks of music, in year 8, the theme is Musical Styles and Cultures where students learn music from across the globe and history. In year 9, the theme is Preparing for Pathways where pupils follow a more holistic approach to performing, appraising and composing which prepares them for WJEC accreditation in years 10 and 11.

Sensory Curriculum

Students whom follow the sensory curriculum have topics every half term which are consistent with other subjects. Music lessons are planned around these topics but with a focus on developing and understanding the core musical elements and using music as a tool for improving communication and movement. Music is inclusive for all, so we are lucky to have accessible technology and instruments that are designed to make music performance and creation possible and individualised to specific needs.

Extra Curricular

As well as peripatetic instrumental lessons, we have a huge list of clubs for students to take part in. We have a samba band, choir, radio show, music therapy, rock band and more. We always have opportunities to perform at choir concerts, festivals, productions or workshops from guest visitors.

Impact

We provide the support that allows music to be accessed by everyone. Anyone has the potential to be a musician, providing they have the right guidance. We continually assess pupil progress through B Squared targets and data analysis but we ensure progress through making music fun and engaging.

“Where words fail, Music speaks.”
