Implementation

The English curriculum path has been tailored to build on students prior understanding and is individualised to each of their needs, while following the National Curriculum. Key Stage 3 The Key Stage 3 curriculum is created to spark and inspire a joy for reading. Creating a love for learning through a personalised curriculum. Students will be reading texts, from a range of authors, which are selected by their English teacher. By choosing a text it allows teachers to choose topics that students will enjoy and promote a love for English.

Key Stage 4 students follow a personalised curriculum path to continue practicing and improving their writing, reading, speaking and listening. Students work towards a qualification.

The qualifications currently available are: –

  • Personal Progress
  • Functional Skills:
  •       Entry Level 1
  •       Entry Level 2
  •       Entry Level 3
  •       Level 1
  •       Level 2
  • GCSE English
  • Language
  • Literature.

Throughout their two years in Key Stage 4 students will continue to read a range of texts such as; Blood Brothers, Poetry, English and Greek Myths, Frankenstein, Shakespeare and Contemporary authors.

Impact

Students are assessed via BSquared, which has individual targets tailored for each student. In Key Stage 4, they are also assessed using their qualifications to monitor and track their progress. Our English teachers provide support and a personalised curriculum that allows every student to access English lessons. Giving them the foundation to transfer these skills to other subjects and life.

The National Curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Read easily, fluently and with good understanding

  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information

  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language

  • begin to develop an appreciation our rich and varied literary heritage

  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences

  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas

  • are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

As all students at Broadfield have an Education, Health and Care plan we promote inclusivity in our curriculum by following the DofE advice and where necessary we consider the guidance from the DfEE which states:

‘teachers should teach the knowledge, skills and understanding in ways that suit their pupils’ abilities. This may mean choosing knowledge, skills and understanding from earlier or later key stages so that individual pupils can make progress and show what they can achieve. Where it is appropriate for pupils to make extensive use of content from an earlier key stage, there may not be time to teach all aspects of the age-related programmes of study.’
