At Broadfield Specialist School we offer an engaging curriculum for the pupils which makes use of a broad range of software and hardware. We aim to give each student the opportunity to apply and develop their technological understanding and skills across a wide range of situations and tasks. Students are encouraged to develop a confident and safe approach to the use of ICT with the understanding of the capabilities and flexibility of their resources.
With a national shift from ICT to Computing or Computer Science lessons focus on how computers actually work, rather than simply how to use them.
Computing at Broadfield Specialist School is delivered in three strands; Computer Science, Information & communication and Online Safety. At Broadfield Specialist School we want all students to be a Master of Technology. Technology is everywhere and will play a pivotal part in the students’ lives. We want our students to understand that there is always a choice with using technology and as a school we utilise technology (especially social media) to model positive use. Building our knowledge in this subject will allow students to effectively demonstrate their learning through creative use of technology.
Staff are highly experienced and follow appropriate professional development opportunities to support delivery models. This allows work to be differentiated to meet ability ranges. Each subject follows a curriculum map that highlights the content and progression. Assessment is both formative and summative to inform next steps in learning and summarising attainment and progress.
The expectations for Computing are that students will have an overall ability to be able to use a computer confidently and safely. Students will be able to produce creative work and show an understanding of a range of software. Students will show an understanding of the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms, data representation and robotics. Students will be able to evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies. The Computing curriculum prepares students for adulthood by making them responsible, competent, confident and creative users of ICT.
