KS3/4 Science

At Broadfield School we believe that Science is best learned and understood through hands-on experimentation and investigation.

Intent

At Broadfield School we believe that Science is best learned and understood through hands-on experimentation and investigation.

We acknowledge that were it is appropriate for students to make extensive use from an earlier key stage, there may not be time to teach all aspects of the age-related programme of study. However, wherever possible, topics covered will be in line with the programme of study for the appropriate Key Stage.

The development of practical skills is an important component of Science education, and as such, all students will be given opportunities to practice these skills.

Implementation

In KS3, lessons have a practical focus to allow pupils to develop Scientific skills and knowledge through direct experience. We begin by looking at how Science is applied in the real world to encourage pupils to further develop their understanding before moving to more abstract Scientific concepts.

In KS4 some students study the AQA GCSE Trilogy Combined Science course which allows them to continue a balanced approach to their Biology, Chemistry and Physics studies and results in a Double Science GCSE award. Other students will study AQA Entry Level Science, which sits alongside the GCSE course to provide opportunities for all learners to gain a Science qualification in Year 11.

Impact

Our students will become confident in their ability to investigate and explore the Scientific World. They will foster their team working skills in order to reach a goal, and will be able to analyse and use reasoning to interpret their findings. They will have meaningful and memorable learning experiences that last a lifetime!
