KS3/4 History

We aim to give our students opportunities to develop their curiosity and interest in historic events and periods.

Students can emotionally engage with stories of the past in order to develop a personal connection with History.

Intent

The History curriculum at Broadfield intends to educate students to allow them to:

  • Begin to know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative, from the earliest times to the present day.
  • Develop an understanding of how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world
  • Begin to know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world: the nature of ancient civilisations; the expansion and dissolution of empires
  • Begin to gain and deploy a historically grounded understanding of abstract terms such as ‘empire’, ‘civilisation’, ‘parliament’ and ‘peasantry’
  • Begin to understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and use them to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends, frame historically- valid questions and create their own structured accounts, including written narratives and analyses
  • Begin to understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed
  • Begin to gain historical perspective by placing their growing knowledge into different contexts, understanding the connections between local, regional, national and international history; between cultural, economic, military, political, religious and social history
  • To support Broadfield Schools Key Priorities to provide a curriculum which promotes the representation, value and inclusion of people of all diversities- this includes learning about the origins and history of BAME people

Implementation

A curriculum path has been carefully designed, planned, tailored to build on prior learning, and to provide a balance of knowledge, skills and understanding for every student. In Key Stage 3 students have a weekly lesson where they learn about historic events and periods of time. In Key stage 4 students can choose to follow a WJEC Pathway, were they will access 2 lessons a week.

Opportunities are provided to experience, and develop understanding of events in different times and places. It enriches the curriculum by offering the students to be actively involved in exploring the world around them. This is achieved through exploring and handling artefacts, reenacting events, visiting museums, stories, books, photos and through practical craft like activities linked to particular topics.

Impact

Students work is assessed via BSquared from which students are set individual targets. Teachers make judgements towards progress against learning objectives, success criteria and students work. Verbal feedback is given to students in lessons which allows them to reflect on their work and progress in future tasks. Student’s build upon their skills year on year. An annual report and Achievement Day inform parents/carers of the progress their child is making in History. Students are also encouraged to evaluate their own work as well as peer mark and evaluate.
