Citizenship is a reflection of the school’s ethos and motto as the curriculum enables students to belong, believe, enjoy and achieve as part of the school community and beyond.
Citizenship is a reflection of the school’s ethos and motto as the curriculum enables students to belong, believe, enjoy and achieve as part of the school community and beyond.
At Broadfield, it’s important for students to express their opinions to make a positive impact on our school environment. Student council representatives from each class meet with their key stage each week to discuss what is working in the school and what improvements can be made to ensure our school is at the best it can be. Each year we hold an election, whereby head students are elected to represent our school as head students. It is then their responsibility to take on other duties around school and set good examples for other students.
To promote environmental awareness and sustainability, Broadfield has an eco-club which practices within our school and community. Students take part in various activities such as litter picking and recycling to take action and make a positive impact on the school and the planet.
Citizenship at Broadfield aims to instill a sense of empowerment in students, to allow them to understand their value, rights and responsibilities as active members of society. Citizenship at Broadfield gives students the opportunity to deliver a fair and respectful debate on a multitude of topics relating to the world. We believe British Values are essential for students to thrive as citizens in a diverse and inclusive society, which is why we drive this into our ethos in school, in turn, to create well-rounded individuals who are capable of making informed decisions and contributing positively to the world around them. Citizenship challenges their perceptions of the world, and teaches them how to overcome different financial and life choices.
Students at Broadfield access the Citizenship Curriculum each week, including extra interventions during Social Studies which are tailored to the needs of the individual students. Through a combination of debates, discussions, critical thinking and questioning, students learn the knowledge and skills needed to become positive citizens, alongside how to make a positive impact on the community. Students are given opportunities to go on trips into the community to develop their confidence to access different services around them. Broadfield promotes various activities which support the learning of Citizenship, including workshops and the promotion of special events (Parliament week). Broadfield gives students the opportunity to receive a WJEC entry level qualification in Personal and Social development, which includes units such as preparation for work and managing own money.
Broadfield provides students with the knowledge, skills and experiences to support them to become an active Citizen. We ensure students are equipped to meet daily challenges, and to give them a pathway to lead a happy and fulfilling life.
