Art and Design is an inspiring and motivating subject that allows students to access their creative potential. Students learn to take risks, develop independence and self-evaluate their own and others work in a positive but critical way allowing for personal progress and awareness of next steps. Through Art and Design students develop cross curricular skills including English, Humanities, Citizenship, ICT, Science and D.T.
Students study the following elements of Art & Design:
All students undertake Art on a 3 year rolling programme of study, potentially followed by a 2 year accreditation route. The flexibility of this curriculum allows topics to be added and updated as needed. Teachers develop plans ensuring the learning styles and abilities of all students are met. Planning is developed to link in across all areas of study so that students can identify concepts and themes in a range of subjects and topics. Students are supported to identify the connections between former learning and current learning.
Tasks are set to be engaging but challenging and use a wide range of commercially and teacher prepared differentiated materials and resources. For example, artefacts, photographs, posters, books, paintings, videos. Students develop a range of learning styles including visual, musical, lingual, physical, thinking skills and risk taking. Planning ensures the use of information and communication technology. For example, Art & Design computer programs (such as 2 Paint a Picture, Tiny Draw, Paint, Photoshop Elements) digital cameras and videos. Students are given opportunities to communicate what they see, feel and think, and to value and assess their own and others achievements (Assessment for Learning). Teachers and students work together to identify next steps in their learning and develop routes to achieve their goals.
A key part of the implementation of Art & Design is promoting students awareness of the contextual world of Art. Students are given opportunities to visit a range of art galleries, experience art in the local community, interact with professional artists and exhibit their work in the wider community.
Each student is given the platform to explore the world of art and achieve their full potential. Continual assessment of students B Squared Targets ensure that all of our students are given the best support to challenge their learning further. Data analysis monitoring allows tracking of progress. Identified interventions are provided for students to help them fill gaps in their learning.
Students are often intrigued by the art they see around them daily. They are encouraged to develop their problem solving, perseverance and life skills via the enjoyment of Art and make links to its prominence in everyday life.
